Artist
Belkis Ayon is a Cuban painter and lithographer, who was born in Havana, Cuba on January 23rd, 1967. Most of her work is based off of Afro-Cuban religion, but it also reflects her in a very personal manner. Many of her pieces are painted in black and white, or shades of the two colors. Her exhibitions lasted from 1988, until at least 2006, and on, September 11th, 1999, the artist committed suicide at the age of 32. Since then, the government has praised her work, and none of it has been allowed to leave the country. Below is a video of Belkis Ayon, working on her printmaking:
